Spanish Classes for Kids

Battery Co-Owner Grace Tillinghast is a volunteer Spanish language teacher at St. Pius the Tenth School in Chili. Grace teaches basic Spanish to students in grades K to 3, a total of eight classes and 180 students. "I am delighted that the school accepted my offer because it is so important for children to learn other languages. I started learning languages when I was a little girl in my native Argentina."

"I believe the children are enjoying the experience. I do not only teach the language but a bit of geography, history and semantics as well. For instance, when they learned one of their favorite words, chocolate, I taught them that it originated in Mexico and we found the country on the map. Before I visited Costa Rica, they learned the meaning of its name and that it was discovered in Columbus' 4th trip to the Americas. Older students realized that by mastering the numbers, they can now tell time in Spanish."
