DECEMBER

The Rochester Hispanic Business Association donated a selection of mini stuffed animals to the children at the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong Hospital. Grace Tillinghast, delivered the toys that were given to the children on Christmas.

RHBA Immediate Past Chairperson, named Chair of the Board of the Convention Center

Sergio Esteban, President and CEO of LaBella Associates and Immediate Past Chairperson of RHBA, has been named Chair of the Board of the Convention Center Management Corporation. Sergio was previously serving as Treasurer, and he is the third Chair of the Board named in the 24 years of the Convention Center.

Speaking Engagement

Battery Co-Owner Frederick Tillinghast to speak at the Fourth Annual Conference on Instructional Leadership "Closing the Knowing/Doing Gap for Effective Teaching" organized by the National Catholic Education Association. The conference will be held at Loyola University in Chicago on November 20-22.

Battery Co-Owner Sends Xmas Cheer to the Troops

Xmas Cheers to the TroopsGrace Tillinghast, co-owner of The Battery, sent Christmans stockings to the US troops in Iraq and Afganistan. She has made hundreds of stockings to bring a bit of home to our brave men and women serving overseas.

This is the third years that she has helped Operation Shoebox, the organization that will distribute the stockings filled with goodies to those fighting the war on terror.

 

The Rochester Hispanic Business Association and some of its members honored by Latinas Unidas

AwardAs part of the celebration of their Quinceañero Anniversary, Latinas Unidas honored 15 local organizations during the 2008 Reconocimiento Award Luncheon that took place on November 12 at the Hyatt Hotel. The Rochester Hispanic Business Association along with the companies of some of our members were among the honorees: City of Rochester, Eastman Kodak, Excellus, Frontier, Ibero-American Action League, State Farm Insurance, Tri-Mar Consulting, University of Rochester and Working Art Media.

Ed Navarro, CEO of EIC Electronics, Inc - RHBA President, and Jackie Ortiz, State Farm Agent, presented each a check for the Latina Women Scholarship Fund. Zory Martinez-Allocco, Ibero-American Action League, presented the key of the office space they are donating to Latinas Unidas.

OCTOBER

Daisy Rivera Algarin has received the "Alicia Torres Award" from Ibero-American Action League for her commitment to the Hispanic community. Daisy is the Chair of Latinas Unidas, an organization promoting the presence of Latina women in the Rochester community that in 2008 is celebrating their 15th anniversary "Quinceañero".

Ed Navarro, Hiram Hernandez, Sr. and Kelly Tovar Mullaney were guest essayist on the Democrat and Chronicle opinion section Speaking Out of October 12, 2008. This was the special edition Hispanic Heritage Month: Entrepreneurs.

Grace Tillinghast was selected "Volunteer of the Year" by the Ibero-American Action League for her work organizing their Hispanic scholarship program, which this year collected over $250,000.00 for applicant students. Grace received the award during the Ibero-American Action League 40th Anniversary Gala on October 17.

Kelly Tovar Mullaney was a panelist in the RIT's Entrepreneurs Conference that took place on October 10. The session was called "Entrepreneurship in the ALANA Community", where the attendees engaged in a discussion about the opportunities and challenges faced by the African American, Latin American and Native American entrepreneurs and start-ups.

Grace Tillinghast was interviewed by the Democrat and Chronicle for an article about how Rochester area voters look at the upcoming presidential elections.

SEPTEMBER

Juan and Maria's Empanada Stop sends another special meal for 110 soldiers in Ballad, Iraq.

The food was prepared in the Public Market and East Rochester locations and includes: rice, beans, three types of empanadas, and three types of hot sauces. The food is placed in special freezers to bring it to about 100 degrees below zero, to ensure the safety of the food during the 6 day trip to Iraq. The precious empanada cargo is scheduled to be brought to the Jefferson Rd. Post Office on Monday September 15th, where they’ll begin the seven thousand mile journey to Ballad, Iraq. Expenses are cover by donations from Juan and Maria's Empanada Stop customers

RHBA Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

The Rochester Hispanic Business Association and several of its individual members have sponsored the Hispanic American History Supplement in partnership with the Democrat and Chronicle. The 16-page publication will be distributed to schools and libraries in Rochester and near by counties the third week of September during Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated in the United States from September 15th to October 15th.

This year's supplement highlights our neighbor to the South, Mexico, as well as Mexican Americans, the largest subgroup among Hispanics in the US. It also includes articles about Mexican 'fiestas', Spanish influence in the country, Hispanic Olympians and Hispanics in the political arena.

AUGUST

Press Release: Hiram Hernández, Sr. named 2008 Hispanic Business Person of the Year

Hiram Hernandez, Sr. was featured in article on D&C Business Section on Sunday August 24th. The article describes Mr. Hernandez' beginings in the business world, and the success in his latest entrepreneurial proyect, First Capital Payments, a business he started with his children. This path that along with his community envolment, lead to Mr. Hernandez being named 2008 Hispanic Business Person of the Year by the Rochester Hispanic Business Association.

Iveth Reynolds featured in the "On the Ladder" section of the Democrat and Chronicle. During the interview and video, Iveth describes the challenges she faced during her career, how she got started in her business, her mentors and current activities, including her latest achievement: as a member of the NY Chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs, Iveth has been commissioned to start a Rochester branch for the Western New York area.

The July issue of the NYS LULAC newsletter "La Charla" features a profile of Ed Navarro and his company EIC Electronics in its Focus On section. The NYS LULAC (New York State Chapter of the League of United Latino American Citizens) advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 700 LULAC councils nationwide.

Ed Navarro was the guest speaker on July 30 at Nazareth College "M.S. in Management - Executive Lecture Series." The topic was Personal and Business Survival in Times a Changing - Do You Have What It Takes? and during the presentation Ed shared his experience as a business owner.

Manuel Rivera-Ortiz's latest photography project featured in the Demochrat and Chronicle in the Sunday edition. The book is titled Voices in the First Person, and it's a collection of 21 short stories by Latino literaries.

JULY

Sergio Esteban from LaBella Associates, P.C was interviewed for the article "High prices prompt search for cost-saving measures" on the Rochester Business Journal. The article was about funding alternatives to help ease the impact of expensive materials in the building and design industries. [RBJ 7/11/2008]

A new Juan and Maria's Empanada Stop restaurant (Juan Contreras) has opened in West Commercial Street in East Rochester to satisfy the growing demand from the regular and new customers of the Public Market location. They will continue operating the Public Market location, but all production will be done at the East Rochester site.

JUNE

RHBA Awards Scholarships to Hispanic Students

Brian Chester and Briana Lopez Continuing with its tradition of celebrating the achievements of Hispanic students, RHBA has awarded scholarships to two young Hispanics: Brian Chester and Briana Lopez.

Brian is a graduating senior at Gananda High School. He plans to continue his studies at Canisius College in Buffalo and will major in International Relations with a minor in Spanish and Italian.

Briana is presently a student at Dansville High Scvhool. She will attend Elmira College ad will pursue a career in business administration.

The scholarships were presented at the 13th Annual Gala and Scholarships Awards of the Ibero-American Action League on June 7th.

RHBA board member and Membership Chair Grace Tillinghast chaired the Hispanic Scholarship Endowment Fund Selection Committee.  RHBA board member and Website Chair Kelly Tovar Mullaney was a member of the selection committee. $205,000 were awarded in scholarships to 23 college-bound Hispanic students from the Rochester area.

Felipe de Chateauvieux has been featured in an article of the April issue of the Daily Record. The article, titled "Court interpreter 'an intelligent phone', describes how Mr. Chateauvieux's got started a Spanish language interpreter in the courts and what the job entitles.

MAY

Grace Tillinghast was recognized for Outstanding Service as Chair of the 2007 Arts Awards Selection Committee for the Arts and Cultural Council for Greater Rochester. She has chaired the annual event for the last six years and will co-chair the 2008 Arts Awards Selection Committee. Grace is a board member of the Arts Council and Membership Chair of the Rochester Hispanic Business Association.

Grace Tillinghast has been appointed Treaurer of the Do the Right Thing Program of the Rochester Police Department. The appointment is effective immediately.

Manuel Rivera-Ortiz is part of the new book Voices in First Person. Published by Simon & Schuster, the book is a collection of monologues written by accomplished Latino authors.
Manuel has also a featured article in the April issue of Rangefinder, a magazine for professional photographers.

MARCH

Easter ToysEaster Bounty for Children at Strong Hospital.
The Rochester Hispanic Business Association donated a selection of bunnies, ducks, chicks to the children at the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong Hospital. Grace Tillinghast, delivered the toys that were given to the children on Easter Sunday.

 

Free tax preparation for senior citizens, people in disability.
You are required to file a 2007 Federal Income Tax in order to receive a Tax Rebate Check.   Many of our senior citizens and disabled have had no need to file in the past yet will need to file this year to receive the Tax Rebate Check. Burgos Income Tax (Alfred Burgos and Vilma Burgos-Torres) is offering free tax preparation on Saturday March 15, 2008 for this sector of our community.

25 Anniversary of The Battery.
The Battery, the first indoor baseball and softball training facility in Western New York, turned twenty five years old this week. When Co-Owners John, Grace and Frederick Tillinghast started the business, people were using the batting cages to practice and improve their baseball and softball swings. They incorporated training sessions such as the Winter Baseball Academy which has just finished its 23rd season, a Spring Baseball Academy, hittings camps for all ages, an Advanced Hitter's Club and individual lessons in catching, fielding, hitting and pitching.

FEBRUARY

Vilma Burgos Torres is featured in the front page story of ConXion: "Escaping the No. 1 Killer", as she crusades to warn others of heart disease in women. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading killer of Latinos, claiming more than 122,000 lives per year.

JANUARY

LaBella Associates won contract for a redevelopment plan for the Midtown Plaza site (Sergio Esteban, CEO). LaBella will be responsible to perform the environmental review process, suggest PAETEC's placement on the parcel, evaluate whether Midtown's underground garage should be saved or scrapped, and recommend how the rest of the site should be used.
